What is a metered-dose inhaler?
A metered-dose inhaler is a device that helps deliver a specific amount of medication to your lungs and is commonly used to treat asthma. Each inhaler consists of a pressurized canister of medication and a mouthpiece. Pressing down on the inhaler releases a spray of medication that you breathe into your lungs.

How can I use a metered-dose inhaler correctly?
A. Open your mouth. Hold the inhaler 2-4 cm away from you.
B. Use the spacer attached to the inhaler.

  1. Remove the cap and hold the inhaler upright.

  2. Shake the inhaler.

  3. Hold the inhaler as shown in pictures A or B.

  4. Spacers are useful for all patients, especially young children and the elderly (see picture B).

  5. Press down on the inhaler to release the medication, and at that moment begin to inhale slowly.

  6. Breathe in slowly for 3 to 5 seconds.

  7. Hold your breath for 10 seconds to allow the medication to go deep into the lungs.

  8. Repeat the puff as directed. Wait one minute between puffs to allow the second puff to enter the lungs better.
