\nAzathioprine is used as a treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded to other types of medications (for example, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen). Rheumatoid arthritis occurs because the immune system attacks the joints. For cases of rheumatoid arthritis detected at an early stage, it is treated with intensive doses of Azathioprine, which helps reduce further joint damage and maintains joint function. This medication may also be used, as determined by the doctor, to treat systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), to prevent the immune system from rejecting transplanted organs, to treat a certain type of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease) that does not respond to conventional treatments, and to treat other immune system problems (autoimmune diseases).<\/span><\/p>\n
