What is a nebulizer?<\/strong><\/span>
\nA nebulizer is a device for respiratory treatments to help you breathe better. The nebulizer changes liquid medication into a very fine mist. The mist enters the airways and lungs when you breathe it in. Nebulizer treatments can be given to infants, children, and adults. You can receive nebulizer treatments when you are in the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n

Follow these steps to use a nebulizer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Wash your hands thoroughly before using the nebulizer and make sure the equipment is clean.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    If using a multi-dose medication bottle with the nebulizer, use a dropper to administer the correct dose of medication into the cup with saline solution. If the medication is in single-use vials, twist off the top of the plastic vial and squeeze the contents into the nebulizer cup.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Attach the mouthpiece to the T-shaped elbow. The unit is secured to the cup. For children over two years old, a mouthpiece is recommended because it will deliver more medication than a mask.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Connect the nebulizer tubing to the port on the compressor unit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Turn on the compressor and check the nebulizer to make sure there is a mist. When using a finger valve, cover the air opening to allow air to enter the nebulizer. If you are not using a finger valve, the nebulizer will produce a continuous mist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    When using the nebulizer, sit in a comfortable, upright position. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it. When using a mask, make sure it fits well so that the mist does not get into your eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  7. \n

    Exhale gently. When the mist begins, inhale slowly through your mouth. Continue for three to five seconds per breath while keeping your finger on the valve opening.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  8. \n

    Hold your breath for up to 10 seconds before exhaling. This allows the medication dose to deposit in the airways.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  9. \n

    At the end of the deep breath, uncover the valve opening to stop the mist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  10. \n

    Continue this process until the medication in the cup is gone. The nebulizer will likely start sputtering when it is empty.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Follow these tips before and after using the nebulizer<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      After using the nebulizer, it should be cleaned according to the instructions. Neglecting to do so may result in bacterial growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Store your nebulizer and its supplies in a clean, dry, dust-free place.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Discard nebulizer tubing that becomes cloudy or retains moisture.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Replace disposable parts, tubing, and filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Using the nebulizer cup for longer than indicated will result in slower and less effective medication delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      When using nebulizers, always use a mask or mouthpiece when administering or receiving treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      When treating infants and young children, you should purchase equipment that can be used when the child is reclining or sleeping.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n
