What is prednisone? Prednisone is very similar to cortisol. Your adrenal glands produce cortisol in the blood. Prednisone is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, and other autoimmune diseases.

How does prednisone work?
Prednisone works by reducing the harmful effects of diseases that affect the immune system. Prednisone also reduces inflammation (heat, redness, swelling, pain).

What is the best way to take it?

  • You should take this medication in the morning if you take it once daily.

  • You should take this medication with food to prevent stomach upset.

  • You should take calcium and vitamin D as recommended by your healthcare provider.

  • It is very important to gradually reduce the dose and not stop taking corticosteroids abruptly to avoid significant risks.

Who should not take prednisone?

  • Patients who have had a severe allergic reaction to prednisone.

What are the possible side effects of this medication?

  • High blood sugar levels, which usually reverse when stopping the medication.

  • Risk of infection. Avoid contact with people who are sick or have colds or flu.

  • Abdominal pain.

  • Weight gain.

  • Mood swings.

  • Changes in body fat distribution.

  • Bone weakness with long-term use.

  • Muscle weakness.

  • Skin changes (acne, stretch marks, slow healing, hair growth).

  • Cataracts or glaucoma with long-term use.

  • For women: vaginal yeast infection. Please notify your doctor if you experience itching or discharge.

  • A rare side effect of prednisone is bone necrosis (avascular necrosis). This can occur in any bone but is common in the hip bones, resulting in groin pain.

  • Sleep disturbances and hyperactivity.

Do I need blood tests when taking prednisone?
You do not need regular blood tests when taking prednisone.

How should I store this medication?

  • Store the medication at room temperature.

  • You must protect the capsules from moisture.
