What is Montelukast (Singulair)? Montelukast contains leukotriene inhibitors. Leukotrienes are chemicals released by the body when breathing in an allergen. These chemicals cause swelling and inflammation of the lungs and constrict the muscles around the airways, leading to asthma symptoms. Montelukast is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months. It is also used to relieve runny nose and sneezing due to allergies in adults and children as young as 6 months.

Montelukast is used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children as young as 12 months. It is also used to relieve runny nose and sneezing due to allergies in adults and children as young as 6 months.

How should I take Montelukast?

  • The medication is usually taken in the evening.

  • You should take it every day, so try not to forget or miss any dose.

  • Swallow the tablets whole.

  • Granules can be mixed with cold food (but not with liquid), or simply swallowed.

What are the possible side effects of Montelukast?
Seek emergency medical help if you have any of the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Talk to your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects: skin rash, severe bruising, tingling, numbness. Changes in mood or behavior, depression, or suicidal thoughts. Worsening of asthma symptoms.

What do you need to know before taking this medication?

  • Do not use Montelukast to treat an asthma attack that has already started. It will not work quickly enough to reverse symptoms. It may take several weeks of using this medication before it improves symptoms. For best results, keep using the medication as directed.

  • Call your doctor immediately if you have any changes in mood or behavior, anxiety, depression, or thoughts of suicide or self-harm.

  • Tell your doctor immediately if any of these very unlikely but very serious side effects occur: mood changes (e.g., agitation, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts/attempt), stomach pain, muscle pain/cramps, irregular heartbeat, dark urine and yellowing of eyes or skin, numbness or tingling in hands or feet and dulled sense of touch, easy bruising or bleeding, swelling, seizures.

What should you do if you miss a dose of this medication?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to the schedule.

Where can I store the medication?
Store the medication at room temperature (25°C / 77°F), away from light and moisture.
